Coco Gauff is determined not to repeat the same mistake she made after reaching her first Grand Slam quarter-final, following her latest run at the Australian Open.

Gauff advanced to the last eight in Melbourne for the third straight year, defeating Karolina Muchova in a match that showcased her growing consistency on tour.

This also marks the 10th Grand Slam quarter-final of her career, with the American star still just 21 years old.

Reflecting on her achievement, Gauff acknowledged a mistake she had made almost five years earlier, following her first Grand Slam quarter-final appearance.

Gauff’s first appearance in a Grand Slam quarter-final came at the 2021 French Open, back when she was just 17.

When addressing the difficult obstacles she has encountered in her career, the 21-year-old confessed that focusing too much on the future ultimately proved detrimental.

In her post-match press conference following the victory over Muchova, Gauff said: “I think always in the past for me was maybe not looking too far ahead.

“I remember when I made my first quarter-final, such an idiot, I think it was French Open, and I was, like, oh, my God, I’m so close to winning.

“Obviously it wasn’t. Plenty of people make the quarter-finals in their career and didn’t win. That’s just how I thought at that age.

“Honestly now I just treat every match like I’m the furthest away from the trophy, even if I am in the final. I find in the final I treat it now as if I’m the furthest possible away, like I’m not even close. For me, in my head that just helps me play better. I don’t know if that will work for everybody else.”

A look back at Coco Gauff’s previous nine Grand Slam quarter-finals

Gauff has appeared in nine Grand Slam quarter-finals before this, with mixed results throughout those matches.

Her first quarter-final appearance came at the 2021 French Open, where she lost in straight sets to Barbora Krejcikova, who went on to win the title.

However, she has also come out on top in five of those nine quarter-finals, including runs that led to her lifting the trophies at both the French Open and US Open.

Her record in Melbourne has been a bit more up and down. Last year, she was knocked out by Paula Badosa in the quarter-finals but managed to reach the semi-finals the year before that.

Looking ahead, Gauff will be hoping to draw on her 2024 Australian Open run when she faces Elina Svitolina next.

This will be their fourth meeting overall, with Gauff currently holding a 2-1 advantage in their head-to-head matchups.

The only previous time they met at the Australian Open was back in 2021 when Svitolina came out on top. Since then though, it has been two wins for Gauff.
