Connor Godsey eagles late, builds cushion for Riviera Open win worth 12k
HOLLY HILL — A healthy boost in Riviera Open prize money couldn’t have come at a better time for Connor Godsey, whose two-shot victory Sunday earned him $ 12,000.
“My wife and I just bought a house, so that’ll be nice,” said Godsey, an Alabama native who has settled in the Jacksonville area for the past several years.
Godsey’s fourth eagle of the 36-hole weekend, on the par-5 17th, put him three shots up heading to the 18th, where an eventual bogey did no harm. He shot 62-67 on the par-71 course. His two-day total of 13-under 129 was two clear of Colin Monagle (69-62) and Thomas Longbella (67-64). Their runner-up tie was worth $ 4,500 to both.
Monagle, who started the day seven back, caught Godsey at one point on the back nine, thanks to a run of six straight birdies starting on the 12th. Godsey had regained the lead by one when he hit 7-iron to five feet on the 17th and made the eagle putt.
Godsey was 1-under through eight holes Sunday before kickstarting his round with a chip-in eagle on the short, par-4 ninth. He made eagle where even birdie was looking like a chore after he short-sided himself left of the green behind a bunker. But a lob with his 60-degree wedge found the cup.
“You never expect it to go in from there,” he said later. “I wasn’t hitting it well by any means, but I made that for eagle on nine and kinda got going after that.”
Jonathan Yaun and Clay Amlung tied for fourth at 10 under. Willie Mack III, Matt Nagy and Bob Sowards shared sixth, another shot back. Two-time PGA Tour winner Matt Every was among four who tied for ninth at 8 under.
Sowards, while finishing sixth overall, won the 50-and-one senior division by two shots over Tim O’Neal.
Professional golf remains in the area over the next two weekends, with the Florida Tour’s Indian River Open next weekend (Dec. 13-14) at New Smyrna Beach, followed by a tournament at Cypress Head in Port Orange the following weekend (Dec. 20-21).
