Girls tennis roundup: Willmar loses a close one to Detroit Lakes
Sep. 23—DETROIT LAKES — The Willmar girls tennis team fell 4-3 to Detroit Lakes on Tuesday.
Willmar's wins came at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.
Kennedy Mara beat the Lakers' Isabelle Wolf 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1. Emily Floren earned the victory over Audrey Hochgraber at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
The Cardinals' Norah Neges and Bryn Behr won at No. 1 doubles over Jaycie Sliper and Cadence Bloom 6-4, 6-3.
Detroit Lakes' toughest victory was at No. 3 singles. The Lakers Ava Fradenburgh beat Aubrey Peterson 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
Willmar next plays at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Sartell. Sartell went into Tuesday with a 2-6 conference and 4-12 overall record.
Osakis swept the doubles matches in its win against the Wildcats at New London.
Emma Friedel and Delany Barber earned New London-Spicer's pair of points in singles play.
Friedel earned a 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 win against Mataya Moore at No. 2 singles. Barber won 6-3, 6-4 against Alexis Bruder at No. 4 singles.The Wildcats, who are 2-2 in the Wright County Conference, have an 8-4 overall record.
NLS plays in the WCC individual tournament at 10 a.m. Thursday in Glencoe.
Parkers Prairie nearly swept Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at Parkers Prairie.
Kwynn Quade earned the sole point for the Jaguars. The freshman earned a 6-1, 6-3 win against McKinley Bosl at No. 4 singles. There were no matches that reached a third set.
BBE hosts MACCRAY/Renville County West at 4 p.m. Thursday at Belgrade.
Minnewaska nearly came away with a clean sweep over the co-op of Morris/Chokio-Alberta/West Central Area at Glenwood.
All of the Lakers' wins were in straight sets, led by Ari Quelle. The freshman won 6-0, 6-1 over Halle Grimm at No. 4 singles.
Minnewaska and MACA/WCA are headed to the West Central Conference meet that begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria.
Montevideo won six of seven matches in straight sets to beat MACCRAY/Renville County West at Clara City.
No. 2 doubles went three sets. Sophomores Kamryn Bjerkeset and Becca Golden beat MACCRAY/RCW's Anna Janssen and Lilyanne Pauling 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Janssen is a senior and Pauling is a sophomore.
Montevideo and MACCRAY/RCW both compete in the West Central Conference meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria.
Brianna Borstad and Aidyn Bonn beat Yellow Medicine East's Kyla Smith and Carley Redepenning in three sets at No. 2 doubles to break a 3-3 tie and lift Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd past the Sting at Granite Falls.
Borstad and Bonn earned a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 win. One other match reached a third set, which came as a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win for LQPV/DB's Greta Hacker over Abigail Jimenez at No. 4 singles.
LQPV/DB swept the doubles matches as Molly Halvorson and Camryn Olesen won at No. 1 doubles and Kenna McTighe and Riley Clark were victorious at No. 3 doubles.
Brianna Nelson, a sophomore who has a 12-2 record this fall, led the way for the Sting's singles players with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alexis Olesen.
LQPV/DB hosts Sauk Centre at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Madison. YME plays at Redwood Valley at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
