Jannik Sinner hails ‘incredible’ Joao Fonseca on Instagram following Indian Wells duel
Jannik Sinner came away from Indian Wells with plenty of respect for Joao Fonseca after their intense match at Indian Wells.
The Italian got the better of Fonseca in straight sets, 7-6(8-6), 7-6(7-4), but it was far from a straightforward win as shown by the scoreboard.
Fonseca brought plenty of aggression and energy, forcing Sinner to stay sharp throughout both tight sets.
The Brazilian teenager, just 19 years old, showed little sign of nerves despite the occasion and opponent.
Sinner needed over two hours to get past the world 35 on Stadium 1.
Following his victory, the winner took to social media to share a gracious message, paying a great compliment to his Indian Wells opponent.
Joao Fonseca earns praise from Jannik Sinner after Indian Wells victory
Sinner shared photos from the match on Instagram, posting: “Quarters next!
“Really happy with yesterday’s match.
“Congrats to Joao Fonseca on playing incredible tennis.
“Great atmosphere out there [Indian Wells].”
Sinner’s comments were a nice gesture and will have given Fonseca plenty of encouragement after a strong showing against one of the game’s top players.
Joao Fonseca and Learner Tien named ATP rising stars
Sinner, though, will not have much time to reflect on the win. He needs to shift his attention quickly to his upcoming quarter-final match at Indian Wells.
There he will face American Learner Tien, who is seeded 25th at this year’s tournament.
Tien first caught the spotlight with a surprise win over Ben Shelton, then followed it up by saving two match points before beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Sinner versus Tien, just like Sinner versus Fonseca, is another glimpse into what the future of tennis could look like.
Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner are already established as top talents in men’s tennis. But Fonseca and Tien seem to be among those closest to challenging that dominance in the years ahead.
All four players – Sinner, Alcaraz, Fonseca, and Tien – are past winners of the Next Gen ATP Finals. But it is still early days for the youngsters when it comes to reaching the same level as the Italian and the Spaniard.
What is clear is that both Fonseca and Tien are rising stars worth keeping an eye on. Jakub Mensik and Arthur Fils are also making steady progress up the rankings.
