Jelena Ostapenko calls out unruly spectator in Linz win over Alexandra Eala
The fiery Jelena Ostapenko is at it again. Her verbal and emotional on court personality was on full display in Linz as she defeated Alexandra Eala for the first time in her career.
Eala defeated Ostapenko during her miraculous 2025 Miami Open run, and on another occasion last year, an injured Ostapenko retired midmatch against Eala.
In the second set, playing from behind, Ostapenko heard enough from one particular heckling spectator.

What Ostapenko said
Ostapenko held her racquet out, looked at the person, and encouraged him to come down and play for her so she could learn from him.
She also alerted tournament officials about the spectator, wanting him removed if the behavior continued.
Tough situation
Tennis matches are repeatedly becoming a breeding ground for unsportsmanlike behavior among fans.
Eala is beloved by many and has a contingent of Filipino fans that travel with her around the world. Ostapenko’s behavior did not sit well with them.

Spectators are repeatedly inserting themselves in tennis matches, and though players are encouraged to ignore them, it must be difficult.
How far is too far for spectactor interfence? What if anything, can be done about it?
Ostapenko in 2026
Ostapenko is a former Linz champion who has won 9 singles and 12 doubles titles. Prior to Linz, she has a 9-8 singles record in 2026. She is looking to gain her clay court form quickly in Linz before heading to Stuttgart next week where she is the defending champion.
Ostapenko is known for many things including the contrast between her on-court and off-court personality, her persistent electronic line calling questioning, and her undefeated record against Iga Swiatek, 6-0.
Fans noted the irony of Ostapenko beating Eala, who was training last week at Rafa Nadal Academy, alongside Swiatek.
