Jon Jones sends cryptic message, downplays 'silly lies' amid hit-and-run allegations
Despite being the center of attention for all the wrong reasons once again, Jon Jones is still letting his voice be heard through messages on social media.
The former UFC heavyweight champion recently had his retirement announced by UFC CEO Dana White during a post-fight news conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. Jones would later confirm the news on social media. It was an unceremonious moment for one of the most decorated fighters in the history of the sport, but in the days that followed, more layers to the story were revealed.
Jones was alleged to be involved in a hit-and-run incident in Albuquerque on Feb. 21, in which he fled the scene, leaving a half-naked woman behind in a crashed vehicle. The woman said Jones was driving the car at the time of the crash, and that they were both drinking at his home before the incident occurred. During the interaction with police, the woman handed her phone to a responding officer while a man who sounded like Jones was on the line. The man on the phone never identified himself, but he made threatening remarks to the officer.
Albuquerque Police released bodycam footage of the incident on Tuesday. Jones’ attorney says he’s innocent.
Jones was active on X (formerly Twitter) Tuesday evening, responding to a fan and issuing a cryptic message.
“One thing we all know about snakes, you let them hang around long enough, it’s only a matter of time before you get bit,” Jones wrote on X. “It’s good to be real with the people that’s known you for a long time, but sometimes it’s OK to outgrow people. These are the reasons why”

The unpunctuated sentence at the end potentially indicated a follow-up message was coming, although one never did. Instead, in his next post, Jones replied to a fan who wished him well in retirement, while seemingly downplaying the recent news.
“Thank you, so far it’s going really amazing,” Jones wrote. “Outside of the silly lies and distractions. Just became owner of another company. I would say first year in the retirements going pretty good. Two new businesses in the books.”

It’s unclear if Jones was referring to the recent allegations of the hit-and-run incident as “silly lies and distractions,” however, it would be consistent with a cryptic tweet Jones sent two days prior, in which he encouraged people not to believe everything they read online. That message, of course, was written before the bodycam footage of the alleged incident was released.
Jones is scheduled for a bond arraignment July 24.
