LPGA makes it official: Major Chevron Championship moving to Houston's municipal Memorial Park

The Chevron Championship officially has a new home. The LPGA Tour announced on Wednesday that it will play the first major of the season at the municipal Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, where the PGA Tour also hosts an event.

The Chevron was at The Club at Carlton Woods for the last four years after a long run at Mission Hills in California. The major is moving, but it will still be in the Houston area, where Chevron and its thousands of employees—many of whom volunteer and work on the tournament—are based.

The PGA Tour's Texas Children’s Houston Open is March 26-29, and the Chevron Championship follows a month later, April 23-26. The LPGA and PGA Tour sharing the same course within a few weeks has many benefits for the LPGA. It’s significant because so much that is needed to host a tournament—including grandstands and tents—will already be in place. Memorial Park, which was renovated by renowned architect Tom Doak, with input from Brooks Koepka, is also closer to Chevron’s headquarters.

“Chevron’s partnership continues to set a standard for what it means to invest in women’s golf—not just as a championship, but as a platform to inspire and grow the game,” Craig Kessler, the LPGA’s commissioner, said in a release.

“Moving the Chevron Championship to Memorial Park Golf Course strengthens that vision. It brings the event closer to the heart of Houston, connecting more fans and communities to our athletes, and helping ensure this major—a tradition that began in 1972—continues to shine as one of the game’s most meaningful stages.”

This will be Kessler’s first time overseeing the first major of the year as he took over the commissioner’s role last summer.

The course is located near downtown, and the proximity to Chevron’s headquarters was a factor in moving it.

Last year, Mao Saigo won the Chevron Championship in a five-woman playoff on the first hole, so the tournament at Carlton Woods ended with a bang.

“The Chevron Championship’s move to Memorial Park Golf Course demonstrates our continued commitment to growing the game of women’s golf and expanding our presence in the City of Houston,”

Laura Lane, chief corporate affairs officer for Chevron, said in a release. “For more than a century, Houston has been central to Chevron’s story. Collaborating with Memorial Park allows us to honor that legacy while advancing our commitment to women’s golf and giving back to the community.”

It’s extremely rare that an LPGA major and PGA Tour event will be played on the same course in the same season. Last year, the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour both had events at the Black Desert Resort in Ivins, Utah, although at different times during the season. The LPGA played its event, the Black Desert Championship, for just one year and the event is no longer on the schedule. The PGA Tour plays the Bank of Utah Championship at Black Desert in the fall.

Also, the USGA has held the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst.

Chevron has rolled out the red carpet for players and fans, but it’s still trying to gain a foothold with fans in the area. It might be able do just that with a public course that’s well known to local golfers and could draw larger galleries. The course averages 60,000 rounds per year.

The move from California to Texas was difficult for many to accept, especially among those who loved the desert and tradition. The Dinah Shore started in 1972, then became a major in 1983.

At Carlton Woods, the tradition of jumping in the pond continued and Saigo was the last to do it. There’s no such pond at Memorial Park, so that tradition will end as well.
