Movsar Evloev calls for UFC title shot: 'What else?'

Movsar Evloev wants what he says is rightfully his: a shot at the UFC featherweight title.

Evloev (20-0 MMA, 10-0 UFC), long considered the No. 1 contender at 145 pounds, moved to 20-0 by handing fellow contender Lerone Murphy his first professional defeat. Evloev beat Murphy (17-1-1 MMA, 9-1-1 UFC) in a majority decision in the main event of Saturday's UFC Fight Night 270 at The O2 in London.

"I had nine victories (in the UFC) before this fight, and mostly I used my wrestling. But like I've said before many times, my striking is also good," Evloev told reporters backstage at the UFC Fight Night 270 post-fight press conference. "Maybe even if I can't finish, if I show my striking skills, maybe it will be the key to getting the title shot. (It was) against a good striker in his land, an undefeated guy, so what else? Let's fight for the title."

Many, including the UFC commentators, questioned the scoring behind Evloev's win. He won the decision of a close fight, and was deducted a point in Round 4 due to an accidental groin kick. Even with the point deduction, Evloev thought he was the better fighter throughout the 25 minutes.

"I was confident that I won, but maybe most of them are saying this because of that point," Eveloev said. "I feel bad because I hurt him like that. If you know what it feels like, it's so, so bad when somebody hurts you there. It was by accident. I'm not trying to stop this fight. I did worse for myself because I gave him another minute to take a rest, but it was just wrong even if they took it from me. I had at least three or more (rounds) that I won."

Many see Evloev as undeniable for the next featherweight title shot. He joined the UFC in 2019 after becoming champion in M-1 Global and has strung together 10 wins. Those victories include many notable names, including former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling, Arnold Allen, Diego Lopes, Dan Ige and now Murphy.

Despite the impressive streak, UFC CEO Dana White didn't guarantee Evloev a shot, and merely said he "possibly" could be next for champion Alexander Volkanovski.
