Raul Rosas Jr. keeps sights on Jon Jones' youngest UFC champ record

LAS VEGAS – Raul Rosas Jr. isn't going to let a little thing like needing 15 minutes for a win stand in the way of his confidence.

The 21-year-old bantamweight won for the fifth straight time Saturday when he swept the scorecards against longtime UFC fighter and divisional gatekeeper Rob Font (22-10 MMA, 12-9 UFC) on the main card at UFC 326 at T-Mobile Arena.

The win arguably was the biggest one yet for Rosas (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC). Font was No. 13 in the UFC's official bantamweight rankings heading into the bout, a spot Rosas almost certainly will ascend past now.

"I've been working so hard for this moment," Rosas said at his post-fight news conference. "I wish I could've got the finish, but either way, I feel like the performance was good and I passed this test with flying colors.

"… I knew he was going to play it safe, but he played it more safe than I thought. Every time I felt like the submission was there, he would reset and he just wouldn't give me anything, so props to him."

Rosas now has three straight wins by decision, which could be owed to the step up in competition. But there's little doubt his coaches at The MMA Lab in Phoenix can use the cage time he's put in to their advantage.

Rosas famously said he wanted to become the youngest champion in UFC history and break the record held by Jon Jones, who was 23 when he won the light heavyweight title. The clock's ticking for Rosas, and he thinks he'll get there.

"I want to stay active," Rosas said. "I've got two years to break Jon Jones' record, and I feel like I'm on a good path. I'm starting off the year good, being ranked at 21 years old (after this), so we're doing a good job, I think.

"Whoever the UFC puts in front of me (is who I want next), to be honest. If there's anybody that they put in front of me and I get beat, then I'm not ready to become a champion. I believe I'm ready to become a champion."
