Singles stars: Vote for the SouthCoast Girls Tennis Player of the Year
Spring Super Teams for the SouthCoast are on their way, but before we get there, we need help from our readers.
This year, our readers will help determine our players of the year in every sport.
Much like we did with fall and winter sports, our readers will have a say in who our Players of the Year are. We’ve cut down the list of the best of the best into an even more elite group (no easy task).
Vote for our High School Girls Tennis Player of the Year. Reader votes will make up 25% of the tally, with Sports Editor Laurie Los Lee making up the rest of the vote.
Voting will conclude at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2.
Candidates are listed alphabetically by school.
Kohana Fontinha, Apponequet, Senior
Playing No. 1 singles for the Lakers, Fontinha capped off her impressive high school career with an overall record of 60-18 and was named a South Coast Conference All-Star for the fourth straight year. She was instrumental in the Lakers reaching the MIAA Div. 3 Sweet 16. “Kohana is one of the best athletes that l have ever coached,” said Apponequet head coach Ken Lanyon. “She has great control of her strokes and is a real team leader.”
Katherine Johnson, Bishop Stang, Junior
The junior was a force at first singles, finishing the year with a record of 9-2 to power the Spartans to the MIAA Div. 2 playoffs. “Katherine is a top tier athlete, always showing hard work and grit on the court,” said Bishop Stang head coach Victoria Babcock. “She also is an exemplary example of showing humility and passion for the sport.”
Neva Matos, Old Rochester, Junior
No one could keep up with Matos this year as the three-year varsity athlete went undefeated at first singles for the South Coast Conference champion Bulldogs. She also won the SCC Individual Tournament and was named the conference MVP. “Neva had another tremendous year for ORR on the tennis courts, but she was just as valuable off the courts or during practice this season,” said Old Rochester head coach Jim McGonigle. “She truly led by example helping to develop our younger players and being an outstanding role model. During matches, after winning her matches, she was one of our best supporters in helping out her teammates in their matches.”
