UFC 326: Charles Oliveira envisions one more title run after BMF bout

LAS VEGAS – Charles Oliveira still has sights set on reclaiming the UFC lightweight title, but first, he has to capture the BMF title from Max Holloway.

In the main event of UFC 326 at T-Mobile Arena this Saturday (Paramount+, CBS), Oliveira (36-11 MMA, 24-11 UFC) enters a second meeting with Holloway (27-8 MMA, 23-8 UFC), this time for the UFC's most unique title offering. While some fans and fellow fighters critcize the BMF title as nothing more than a marketing gimmick, Oliveira is looking forward to the opportunity of adding it to his trophy case.

"For sure, this is a title – this is a belt," Oliveira said. "The opportunity to take it down to Brazil is something that has never been done before by a Brazilian athlete. When I talk about legacy, and getting records and everything else, that's what I'm talking about."

Holloway won the BMF title by knocking out Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 in one of the most iconic finishes in the sport's history. The title itself has a short lineage, starting with a showdown between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal. Diaz takes credit for creating the title, but Masvidal won the inaugural bout by TKO due to a severe cut over Diaz's eye. Gaethje knocked out Dustin Poirier in the second BMF title fight, notching not only another incredible matchup, but also another finish. Then Holloway took it in the third by flattening Gaethje after pointing to the canvas, and scoring the buzzer-beating knockout.

"I think each and every fighter that actually has held it has given it its importance," Oliveira said. "They've had their ways, and now Max has found a way to give even more importance to a belt like that."

The rematch between Oliveira and Holloway has been over a decade in the making. Their first meeting took place at 145 pounds at UFC Fight Night 74 in August 2015, producing an anticlimactic finish just 99 seconds into the fight. Oliveira suffered a freak injury that he, nor medical professionals, were ever able to fully explain. The former lightweight champ has that fight well in the rear-view, and is looking forward to a more definitive result this time around.

"The first fight between us, let's kill that one. He won that fight – that's it," Oliveira said. "Two great fighters, two legends, two guys that put on a show. We're gonna put on a great show on Saturday."

At 36, Oliveira believes he has plenty left in the tank. If successful on Saturday, he plans on making a push for the lightweight title, which is currently held by Ilia Topuria, plus an interim belt owned by Gaethje. When recently laying out potential future moves, Oliveira teased a return to featherweight, which he now admits was more or less just bouncing ideas around. His last fight at 145 pounds was against Anthony Pettis in 2016.

First things first, he must capitalize on the momentum of a second-round finish of Mateusz Gamrot in October on home soil.

"Get the BMF, then get the title at lightweight, maybe go back to 145 – I don't know," Oliveira said. "We need some time to think this through, and everything else. One step at a time. Maybe there's a possibility of it."
