Waukee Northwest, Xavier sweep Iowa high school girls state tennis singles and doubles

The Iowa high school girls state tennis singles and doubles tournament concluded on Oct. 2, marking the end of individual competition this fall season.

Class 1A took place at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex in Iowa City, while Class 2A was hosted at the Black Hawk Tennis Club at Brynes Park in Waterloo.

Here’s a recap of the action.

Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Gabi Fleming completes three-peat as Class 1A singles champion

For the third season in a row, Xavier’s Gabi Fleming won the Class 1A singles title, claiming victory over Columbus Catholic senior Kate Holton.

Fleming, the No. 1 seed, stormed into the finals without dropping a set. The Xavier junior carried that dominance over to the championship match in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) over the No. 2 seed.

“It feels really good. Again, just all the hard work put on in the offseason for the win; that’s pretty amazing, so I’m pretty happy,” Fleming said. “I think it takes a lot (to win three-straight state titles). I mean, my parents were real great players. I’ve been playing since I was like 8 years old, so just a lot of work.”

Cedar Rapids Xavier's Gabriella Fleming won her third Iowa high school state tennis singles championship in Iowa City on Oct. 2.

She became the eighth player in Iowa history to win three girls state tennis championships. To accomplish that feat three times in a row is what makes Fleming’s win even more special.

“It’s just super amazing to be in the same category as those amazing players, so it’s just really cool," Fleming said.

Gabi Jacobs, a Shenandoah senior, claimed third place.

Cedar Rapids Xavier's Tia Halabi, left, and Gemma Younadam, right, won the Class 1A doubles state championship in Iowa City on Oct. 2.

Cedar Rapids Xavier duo Tia Halabi and Gemma Younadam clinch Class 1A doubles title

The junior tandem of Tia Halabi and Gemma Younadam completed the Class 1A sweep for Xavier by defeating Decorah sophomore Grace Huinker and senior Olivia Huinker in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).

For Halabi and Younadam, claiming the state title was more than just a win — it was redemption and validation too.

Last season, Halabi and teammate Lulu Rozeboom lost to Grace Huinker and Olivia Huinker on the first day of that state tournament. That loss motivated Halabi to turn things around in the finals this season.

“(Winning state) was the goal at the end, but we really worked really hard to achieve it,” Halabi said. “Last season, we lost to them the first day and so it really motivated me to kind of get my revenge back on them.”

Younadam was forced to miss last season's state tournament after she underwent an emergency appendectomy and a second surgery for a non-tennis-related issue. She made up for lost time with a state title that felt all the more rewarding.

"Personally, I always envisoned (winning state) and I think we just always give it our all no matter what and I think it was a common goal between both of us," Younadam said. "Last season, I had two surgeries and I didn't get to participate in state and winning this was the candle on top of my cake."

The third-place match was won by the Pella pair of Abby Hietbrink and Addison Namminga

Waukee Northwest's Addison Latta wins Class 2A singles crown

Freshman Addison Latta hadn't lost a set all season entering the Class 2A state tennis tournament, and that streak continued in the championship match.

As the No. 1 seed, Latta clinched the 2A state singles title with a two-set sweep over Mackenzie Sagers of Cedar Falls.

Dubuque Senior freshman Madeline Bellomy took home third place.

Waukee Northwest's Mia Deines, Riley Hilton secure Class 2A doubles title

The junior duo of Mia Deines and Riley Hilton won Waukee Northwest's first state doubles championship with a win over the Johnston duo of Brianna Launderville and Zoey Studer.

The top-seeded tandem of Deines and Hilton clinched the first set, 6-0, then earned a 6-1 victory in the second set to earn state hardware.

The duo of Lily Belle Barker and Samantha Becker from Cedar Rapids Washington claimed third place with a victory over a Pleasant Valley duo.
