Why Iga Swiatek’s split with Wim Fissette could spell trouble for Katie Boulter

Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek ended her partnership with coach Wim Fissette following the Miami Open.

The pair spent just over a year and a half together, during which time the Polish star picked up a major title and held onto the world number two spot for an extended period. But there were signs it wasn’t quite the right fit, especially given Swiatek’s struggles on clay last season and her slow start to 2026.

Now that she’s looking for a new coach, there are already questions being asked about what this could mean for others on tour. Katie Boulter is among those who could be affected by these changes.

Boulter has been coached by Fissette since May 2025, working with him full-time after splitting from Biljana Veselinovic. She reached a career-high ranking of 17th under his guidance but has struggled this season.

It seems logical to assume he’d stay in that role if Swiatek moves forward with him. If Boulter decides against making any changes herself, she may need to begin searching for another coach soon.

Polish outlet ‘Sport.pl’ provided an update on Swiatek’s search for a new coach.

“We’ve heard from a reliable source that Iga Swiatek’s new coach could be someone the media hasn’t mentioned about our tennis player. He’s Michael Joyce,” they said.

The 53-year-old joined Boulter’s team earlier this year and brings plenty of experience, having previously worked with Maria Sharapova and Jessica Pegula.

Boulter has already seen some positive results under Joyce, winning her first title in two years at the Ostrava Open.

“I’ve just got a new coach and we’re still working things out. I’m having to be patient, which isn’t my biggest virtue,” she said.

“In a way, I’m surprised I already did well in one of the tournaments [the Ostrava Open] because when you change coaches, you’re still very much walking on eggshells and working things out.”

Boulter has climbed 36 spots in the Live WTA Rankings since January. She now sits 64th in the world rankings following her strong start to the year, but is yet to reach her career-high ranking of 27th which she achieved in February 2024.

Despite her strong start to the season, which included a title win in Ostrava and a quarterfinal run at the Merida Open, Boulter did not get a direct entry into the Indian Wells main draw.

She made it through her first qualifying match but fell short in the final round, losing to Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva in straight sets.

Even so, she quickly turned things around in Miami, where she entered the main draw. Boulter opened with a win over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro before facing 17th seed Clara Tauson in the second round.

Boulter lost a tight first set 7-6 (7-4) but fought back to take the second 6-4. She was then handed a third-round spot after Tauson retired early in the deciding set due to injury.

In round three, Boulter ran into an in-form Karolina Muchova. The Czech came through with a straight-sets victory (6-3, 7-5), which looks even more respectable now that Muchova is preparing for her semifinal match in Florida.

Boulter is next scheduled to appear at the Linz Open in Austria on Monday, April 6. Whether Michael Joyce will be by her side remains uncertain.
